If HMP members fit into any of the following groups, they’re exempt (excused) from these new requirements:

  • Currently pregnant or were pregnant in the last two months (Women should report their pregnancy as soon as possible though MI Bridges)
  • Medically frail, including members who are homeless or a survivor of domestic violence
  • Main caretaker for a family member under six years old
  • Full-time student
  • Under 21 and have been in foster care in Michigan
  • Have been in jail or prison in the last six months
  • Receiving unemployment benefits from the state of Michigan
  • Receiving temporary or permanent disability from a private insurer or the government
  • Have “good cause” status because they or a family member living in their home have a serious illness, are hospitalized or have a disability
  • Have a medical condition that limits work, approved by a doctor
  • Caring for a dependent who has a disability and a doctor’s order for full-time care
  • Caring for a person unable to make decisions for themselves
  • People who get food or cash assistance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, such as Food Assistance Program (FAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

If you don’t qualify for an exemption, you’ll have to report at least 80 hours of work or other activities each month. Activities that qualify include:

  • Working (part-time, full-time, self-employed or in-kind work)
  • Looking for a job, including applying for jobs, sending resumes and attending job fairs and workshops
  • Completing high school or college or working toward a GED diploma (Study time also counts)
  • Unpaid internship
  • Volunteering or doing community service with a non-profit up to three months per year
  • Receiving job training
  • Employment in an approved Tribal employment program
  • Participating in substance use disorder treatment (court-ordered or prescribed by a doctor)
  • Non-work earnings, including through a pension, retirement plan and investment, tribal or rental income, which amounts to the state minimum wage for 80 hours per month or more
